Food Pairings for Cabernet Sauvignon

Today is #Cabernet Day, a social media event organized by Rick Bakas. People near and far will be drinking Cabernet Sauvignon and sharing their experience on Twitter, Facebook, or perhaps even a blog.  Just in case you need an excuse to drink some wine and join the fun, check out the post from Vinotology offering Eleven Reasons to participate in #Cabernet Day. At our place we not only drink and Tweet, we also get our feast on! If you want to up your game and add some food to the mix, perhaps our menu will give you some inspiration.

On the Menu

  • Antipasto Platter featuring roasted peppers, Creminelli Tartufo Salami (a free sample from my IFBC swag bag), and black olives
  • Turkey Pesto Meatballs with marinara sauce
  • Truffled Risotto prepared with Oregon Truffle Oil
  • Roasted Vegetable Platter featuring smoked tomatoes

Note that we’re not going with the classic pairing of steak. We’re also not using ground beef or veal in the meatballs. You can easily create successful matches with Cabernet Sauvignon by using the right bridge ingredients to connect the food with the wine. For example, the turkey meatballs will be prepared with a pesto made with walnuts and basil to help connect the wine with the food. Truffles are also considered a bridge ingredient for Cabernet, so I’m hoping the truffle oil helps the risotto pair with the wine.

I’ve often heard vegetarians lamenting that they love red wine, but aren’t sure what food to pair it with. Try smoking some tomatoes in your barbeque. When our friend Bean did this for my hubby’s birthday dinner and we served the dish with Cabernet Sauvignon, it was deemed the best pairing of the night.
